How To Use An Air Compressor
- Check the oil level- this depends on the type of compressor you have, if you’ve got an older one it’s likely it’ll need oil to run properly.
- Attach the hose to the regulator- for this, you’ll need to set the compressor down on the ground and connect the regulating valve with the end of the hose.
- Plug the tool you’re using into the hose- this will depend on what kind of tool you’re using, however, most of them should be fairly simple to attach.

Now you may think that it doesn’t matter what kind of air compressor you get, or even which brand or model you purchase. This couldn’t be further from the truth, the make, brand, and model of the air compressor can make or break your purchase.

Piston vs Portable Air Compressor
Next, you’ll want to decide between piston compressors and portable compressors, this again comes down to whether you want to have a full blown car workshop or just perform maintenance here and there. When it comes to portable compressors, they’re good because they offer you the ability to simply take them with you where ever you’re going. Because of this unless you’re intent on making a full-blown workshop a portable compressor will probably do the trick for you.
If you DO want to make a full blown car workshop, however, you’ll most likely need both types, the portable for smaller tasks and on-road repair, and the piston to do the heavy lifting.
